Gilbert teaches ethics and philosophy, and critical thinking and
writing at the University of Queensland’s Ipswich Campus. Active in the
promotion of philosophy in schools, he has run teacher education
programs and workshops and has acted as a consultant to schools. He was
the founding President of the Queensland Philosophy for Children
Association (QPCA, now QAPS), 1994-6; President of the Federation of
Australasian Philosophy in Schools Associations (FAPSA), 2002-3; and
co-editor of Critical & Creative Thinking, 2003-5.
Gilbert’s research interests include: democratic alternatives to
electoral politics, democracy and education, and collaborative
inquiry-based teaching and learning through philosophy. He is co-author
of Ethics and the Community of Inquiry: Education for Deliberative Democracy (Thomson, 2006), and Engaging with Ethics: Ethical Inquiry for Teachers (Social Science Press, 2000), and Values Education in Schools: A resource book for student inquiry (ACER, 2008 – forthcoming), and has published articles in a number of journals, including Educational Philosophy and Theory and Critical & Creative Thinking.
His contributions to the theory and practice of democratic education
have led to invitations to present his research in many countries,
including: the Institute of Advancement of Philosophy for Children,
Montclair State University, New Jersey; the National Institute of
Education, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore; and the
Institute of Human Studies, Vietnam National Center for Social Sciences
and Humanities, Hanoi.
